Emily, a Grade 2 student from Coldstream, BC, immediately captured The Orange Shirt Societycommittee’s attention with a design that radiates pure happiness and innocence, the way every childhood should be.
Between the 1870s and 1996, more than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children were taken from their families and placed in Indian Residential Schools. For many, happiness became a distant memory or a dream. Emily’s beautiful design offers a powerful symbol of hope. Hope that Survivors find peace & happiness and hope that Canada’s reconciliation efforts will ensure a future where EVERY CHILD MATTERS.

- To create awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of Indian Residential Schools through Orange Shirt Society activities
- To create awareness of the concept of "Every Child Matters"
